What grade would you give Barack Obama so far as President?

WASHINGTON -- It may seem strange to Americans, so close to our independence celebration, that Iraqis should break out the fireworks when our troops withdraw. We are not accustomed to being cast in the British role. In Iraq, nearly every achievement seems colored by ambiguity. But we are seeing achievement nonetheless.

The recent American withdrawal was not a decisive military shift. Our units will no longer conduct unilateral military operations. Except for Baghdad and Mosul, however, this has been the situation in Iraq for months. American troops will still be visible on the streets in a supporting role alongside Iraqis. And American quick-reaction forces can provide assistance in a pinch.

High-profile attacks, mostly by al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI), have increased during the last 30 days, compared to previous months -- perhaps intended to create the impression that American troops were being forced to leave. But "AQI has not been able to mount a sustained campaign," says an administration official. "The attacks are terrible, but AQI is still on the ropes."

Though not militarily decisive, these events are a milestone of a different kind. They represent the success of an approach that once seemed doomed -- the strategy of "as they step up, we step down."

This is one of the most extraordinary reversals of fortune in the history of American warfare. In 2006 and 2007 -- after years of rising violence and disappointed expectations -- much of the public and Congress had concluded with Sen. Harry Reid that, "This war is lost." Some, such as Sen. Barack Obama, recommended almost immediate American withdrawal.

Instead, a number of unexpected and related developments transformed the situation in Iraq completely.

-- President George W. Bush's lonely decision to pursue the surge purchased 24 additional months to train capable Iraqi forces, provide security for civilians, support tribal allies and dig out and eliminate AQI leaders.

-- During the Anbar Awakening, from 50,000 to 100,000 foot soldiers not only left the enemy, but also joined our side, contributing knowledge of the insurgency's inner workings.

-- Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, elected with support from Shiite extremists, went south to take on Iranian-backed militias in Basra -- establishing himself as a national, not just Shiite, leader.

-- And Iraq's Sunnis fully joined the political process, which now absorbs much of the energy that might otherwise spill into the streets.

None of these achievements is perfect or permanent. But foreign policy success is judged by comparative, not absolute, standards. The comparison here is to an American withdrawal two years ago -- which would have been Vietnam II, and worse. AQI would have controlled whole regions of Iraq -- it had already established a provisional government in Anbar -- gaining a base of operations against friends in the Middle East, against allies in Europe and against the United States. With Iran's help, Iraq's Shiites would have fought a bloody civil war against al-Qaeda. Sunni neighbors would have been tempted to intervene, leading to a regional war played out on Iraqi soil. Iraqi citizens might have been subjected to genocidal violence. And America would have failed -- not on a distant Asian battlefield like Vietnam -- but in the Middle East, a center of our global interests since World War II.

So what has been accomplished by all the sacrifice, patience and resources that Iraq has consumed? If Iraq succeeds -- if it can bear the weight of its own sovereignty -- it will be a historic advance. Jeffersonian democracy was never assumed or promised. But an Iraqi accommodation in which Shiites, Sunnis and Kurds find common purposes through democratic processes would be an example to the region, which is seeking new models of progress. And the development of a stable American ally in the Middle East that fights terrorism would be a tremendous geopolitical achievement. In spite of past debates, Obama should view this prospect not as a chore, but as an opportunity.

Even if Iraq falls back to the level of political mediocrity that surrounds it, the situation has changed from two years ago. If America had retreated then, it would have been a failure of our will and a failure of our military. But we did not fail. Our military adapted. Our leaders and country persevered. We have given the Iraqis what we owed them -- a decent chance at success, the only gift a liberator can give. Now, a failure would be sad and challenging -- but it would be their own.

"They represent the success of an approach that once seemed doomed."

Social engineering in the middle east is just plain and simple - liberal.

The Kurds want their own state, the Sunnis want their own state, and the Shia's want their own state.

The boundaries of Iraq were drawn by the British, what 100 years ago?

Those people have as much chance of living together as did the people's of Yugoslavia. They got along so long as Josef Tito and a strong central Commie state existed for 45 years. But after various civil wars and genocide we now have the countries of Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia, Kosovo, Bosnia, Macedonia(FYROM) and Montenegro.

So long as a large USA army is present in Iraq those three nationalities will get along. They will wait til we leave.

Freedom for Iraq

No thanks to Liberals.

Guess we'll have to wait 100 years to find out if you were right.

"Guess we'll have to wait 100 years to find out if you were right."

So long as we keep our Bush tax cut for paying for the war in Iraq, right?

"LMAO"

Just imagine....
How much sooner the Iraq theater of the WOT would have been over had the enemy not received aid and comfort from the braying of the naysaying Democrat leadership who daily trumpeted our defeat? It's no surprise the enemy thought we could be defeated. The Dems were telling the insurgents they had already won.

zapdoodat "responds":
"So long as we keep our Bush tax cut for paying for the war in Iraq, right?"
-----

With what Obama and the Dem congress has been spending in just over 4 months - we could "finance" Iraq for years to come.

Tax cuts ALWAYS raise revenues, dummy.

The trick is to slow spending - something I DON'T credit Bush 43 with either.

I see you are still stuck on stupid, zap.

Fireworks
In case nobody noticed, the Iaq people were celebrating freedom for them selves, not that we were pulling out. The big difference is that the British were trying to keep us from haveing the freedom to rule ourselves. There was no disrespect shown here. Wrong take, I believe.

Pyrrhic victory, at best, in Iraq
Michael Gerson, Bush adminisration veteran and advocate of "heroic conservatism" (which appears to have very little to do with conservatism as I understand or can support it) writes in part:
"So what has been accomplished by all the sacrifice, patience and resources that Iraq has consumed? If Iraq succeeds -- if it can bear the weight of its own sovereignty -- it will be a historic advance. Jeffersonian democracy was never assumed or promised. But an Iraqi accommodation in which Shiites, Sunnis and Kurds find common purposes through democratic processes would be an example to the region, which is seeking new models of progress. And the development of a stable American ally in the Middle East that fights terrorism would be a tremendous geopolitical achievement."

Sorry, Mr. Gerson, but at this point I am absolutely unconvinced that any "geopolitical achievement" that is remotely likely in Iraq will be worth the cost to the United States of America. If we win any kind of victory there, it will be the classic kind of "Pyrrhic victory"-- the kind of which it was once said, "Another such victory and we are ruined!" If we're not ruined already.

In all honesty
It was a good thing that Saddam was removed from power. He was an evil man and a ruthless monster to his own people.

Having said that, however, I have to say that I don't think we should have gone to Iraq under the conditions we did. At the time I supported it but as things progressed and I heard the reasons we went in shift and change I started to question the wisdom of it. I question the wisdom of opneing a war on a second front when we haven't won the first front.

I'm glad our troops will be coming home. I truly hope that the Iraqi people will come to terms with democracy, however I will always question the leadership that took us into a second war in the middle of one we were already fighting.

Only The Beginning
Upon seeing the statue of Saddam come down, I said to myself "Now comes the hard part." Replacing the iron fist of the Baathist regime which kept the lid on centuries old rivalries did in fact prove to be a daunting task. Once the military adapted to the changing nasture of its mission and the tactics of the opposition, we helped provide a relatively stable political environment. We will most likely maintain a sizeable military presence in Iraq for decades, but its role in maintaining order will diminish to indirect participation quickly. What the Iraqui state will look like in 25 yrs is up to them.

The Iraq war
If it was a good thing that Saddam was removed from power, aren't you saying that you support the war and oppose our remaining there after the time when Saddam was captured?

Mission Accomplished.

Bush was right to remove Saddam.

Saddam committed "Crimes Against Humanity" giving every country the right to remove him.
The fact that Bush took the lead and made the world a safer place is a credit to him.

The mission was accomplished when Saddam was removed from Office.

Bush was wrong to listen to the Liberal Colin Powell and try to "fix what we broke."
It was broken before we got there.

Given the long track record of being wrong, republican Presidents will do better ignoring Liberals like Colin Powell.

zap, at 1:42 am
you wrote something that makes sense. how did that happen? were you quoting someone else and forgot to add your liberal rubbish? please explain.

God Bless Our Troops
Our military past and present make me proud to be an American. These men and women are the best the world has to offer. The job they have done in Iraq is absolutely amazing. Freedom is not free, and I am extremely grateful for the freedoms you have given me. For all of our troops out there, I wish you a very happy 4th of July.

Thank a Soldier today
God Bless these kids who have sacrificed so much and contributed so greatly to all that our current president tries to tear down.

July 4, 2009 Remember American Soldiers

History will record that the American Soldier and those American Soldiers who have fallen, rank in the greatest humans who have ever lived on this planet.

The American Soldier has set free millions in bondage and defended the freedom of America with willingness of the ultimate sacrifice.

The Fallen American Soldier is someone who walked the hero's path. Someone who walked into the heart of darkness for Duty, Honor and Country.

The American Soldier waits for the day that they have lived for and trained for their entire life - to defend until death, their families and America, its citizens and freedom.

The American soldier is the fiercest Warrior ever in history, because their mission is the defense of family, neighbors, America and freedom.

The families of the American Soldier, while their faces beamed with pride, their hearts were filled with anxiety and tears as they watched their American Soldier leave to defend them and this Great Country.

Families and neighbors look with horror as the military vehicle stops in front of the home of the American Soldier, to inform them of the ultimate sacrifice of their hero.

No honor can be too great; every tribute is too small for the Fallen American Soldier and their families.

God Bless the American Soldier and their families!

God have mercy on every American Soldier in our History who has made the ultimate Sacrifice in defense of this 'Great Nation' and setting Humans free all over the World.

Freedom in Iraq.
I hope and pray that what we have done in Iraq will give them total freedom. But there
has always been unrest in that part of the
world and always will be till God puts an end
to it.

you're not even close
Mr Gerson, you need to recognize that for the last 2 or 3 thousand years this is how these civilizations have worked....Democracy is not described by any history in that region, they exclude 'our' way of life at all costs with the exception of accepting our money. People living in mudhuts and kept that way have a 'ear' of the abomination of democracy, to them it's the de,onization of all they know, may not love, but at least they know what's next. They have no concept of prosper and live together...there must be a whip in someones hand...that they trust, what's so hard to see? We're meddlong in a society that doesn't want our way of life and bargaining with their 'leaders' who only want our oil dependent dollars, at the cost of suprficial Americanism in the region and thousands of sercemen and womens lives, for what, sell that crap to someone else...go back and check history brain-boy and stop harping a song you don't know squat about.

Fireworks in Iraq
I think the celebration in Iraq as our troops withdraw is an honor as they express their appreciation by celebrating their own freedom and thank our troops in a way they know
America celebrates its freedom. It is not an insult nor a celebration that we are leaving, it is a "thank you".

NO VICTORY
It is not vicyory when we decide to end a war as we are doing in Iraq.I can name four or five times in the past when we decided to end a war(starting with The Korean war on down to the present)and there was no victory.
Who ended world war # 2?Who set the time to end it? It was not the United States who set the time to end it.It was Germany and Japan who set the time and ended the war.Total victory means the defeated enemey will say;"It is now time to end this war,I give up."We have never won a war since WW #2,because we are always trying to set a date to end the conflick. That's stupidity. That's no way to win a war.

The Worst Sin...
Knowing the life and work of Jesus tells me that the worst of all sins is.... ingratitude.

The Iraqi's hopefully will come to realize at some future point what the cost of freedom was (and is)and who it was that helped them get it.

The Author and Perfector of truth, liberty, and freedom is patient and faithful to forgive, and so must we.

Ouck Obamaiam
Like the other 'isms, but for Capitalism, Steve McNair is either dead or dying.

Death to Kings, Dictators, Tsars, Politburos, Szairs, etc.

Wear black today.

And, give me LIBERTY and CAPITALISM or give me death.

The War on Terrorism Continues.

Oh that right. Obama doesn't think there is a war on Terrorism.

Obama Has Guaranteed Failure
To see and agree that Obama has guaranteed failure in Iraq (and elsewhere overseas and in the U.S.A.) one only needs to wean themselves from the Comedy Channel – Steve Colbert and Jon Stewart – SNL, Bill Maher, the legthrill-like cable nets, dying print rags, Lib talk radio if there is such a thing left with any appreciable audience and their tinfoil hats as news sources, then read the real news headlines.
Here are some with my immediate, after reading the stories and due consideration continuing reaction enclosed in parentheses with the headlines:
Biden (wearing his khaki suit and suede “combat” boots) spends July 4 with son, other troops in Iraq; Marines go after Taliban in grueling Afghan sun for July 4
(Sending Biden, Obama sets up loss in Iraq) Biden Says Violence Could Cause Disengagement (= surrender of victory Bush had won); Iraq tells (Obama) Biden not to interfere in internal political affairs
Protestors (without shoes to throw at Biden) burn US Flag nearby (on our Independence Day as); Progress to prevail in Iraq, says Biden
(Obama losing, spreading battles in war Bush had won) – 2 troops die in attack on base in Afghanistan (where Obama has set up a Dien Bien Phu); Offensive is first test for Obama’s strategy
Marines go after Taliban in grueling Afghan sun for July 4 (where Obama has set up a Dien Bien Phu); Russia to allow US arms shipments to Afghanistan (SEE THE NEXT REAL NEWS HEADLINE(S) PLEASE) – Putin spokesman: Obama not informed on Russia; Putin Calls On USA Not To Deploy Missile Shield In Europe; Experts see Soviet parts in rocket; NKorea nuclear test warning (cont.)

Obama Has Guaranteed Failure - 2
(Way to go Obama) – Newsweek reporter faces trial; British embassy employee in Iran charged
(Obama/Hillary failed diplomacy increases danger to the U.S. and world) – Missiles show NKorea skills improving
Added note – In addition to the messes in Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Pakistan, North Korea and elsewhere earlier news headlines and other media reports revealed al-Qaeda activity in Somalia with fighters recruited from the U.S. including the body of one killed in the fighting found last week.
Biden said he and Obama would be challenged and at first it would look like they were failing. Biden just did not say Obama and he would be challenged all over the world and would be failing so miserably and tragically as they are unquestionably.

(Please click on my name above to see an analysis of Obama and what we must do to get him out of office before it is too late, if not too late already.)

Heres what we do know...
Thanks to the "Liberal" Colin Powell, and his doctrine of "You broke it, you fix it.", the U.S. is spending billions securing Iraq.

Conservatives oppose the spending saying its not our responsibilty. Iraq was "broken" before we got there.

We do know at the fall of Saddam's Government, less than 400 americans had lost their lives.

Then Liberals started calling our troops murderers, occupiers, torturers and every other dis-repectful name toward our troops.

These irresponsible statements soon appeared on Islamic websites and enabled the Terrorist to recruit fighters and begin killing american soldiers.

The death of the first 400 American Troops clearly rests on the Commander and Chief who sent them there.

The death of the remaining 2800 troops rest on the Liberals who help recruit more terrorist.

Useless Idiot
You show you are clueless about how government works. The Secretary of State works at the pleasure of the President.

Your buck always stops at the most convenient liberal to blame. Keep up the solid Republican analysis.

What powers does the Constitution give the Secretary of State? You must have a very 'liberal' reading of that document.

Zapdoodat

Well I don't know about being clueless.

I do know the "Liberal" Secretary of State Colin Powell is the one who advised the President we should stay and rebuild Iraqi.

I do know many Liberals are complaining about the cost to rebuild Iraq even though they did not complain about the cost to rebuild Kosovo after President Clinton removed Milosovic

So clearly many Liberals dis-agree with President Bush's decision based on advice he received from a "Liberal" Colin Powell. But don't disagree when a Libearal President does exactly the same thing with the advice of his Liberal Secretary of State Madeline Halfbright.

The Past Is Prologue But
Why is anyone here fretting over Powell as Bush’s SecState and Madeline Albright, Clinton’s SecState? Looks like you can’t break away from the past, put aside “childish things” as Obama asked all to do near the time of his inauguration.
Let’s keep it real and current. Let’s look to the future. Let’s do what Obama asked, “come together in bipartisan ways and help [him] lead [this great nation of ours forward in this 21st Century, unfortunately in this present Error of Obamanation.
Let’s talk about Obama and his SecState, Hillary, the one that is failing with him in international relations, diplomacy and warfare around the world – Afghanistan, Canada, China, Communist Cuba, Honduras, Israel, Iraq, Mexico, North Korea, Pakistan, Russia, Venezuela, Somalia, elsewhere in Africa, Asia, Central and South America, Great Britain, Europe and the Middle East. If I left out any country or region where Obama and Hillary have failed I apologize. If I need to write here with the character limitation on Townhall.com posts the details of his failures overseas and domestically you need to apologize for your ignorance going to stupidity.
Hillary’s “failures” are not so much hers as Obama’s. He has isolated her at Foggy Bottom like he has exiled Bill to ambassador to Haiti to shut him up. He did so by threats and use of special envoys even before he was elected and continues to do so.
This is in similar fashion to his appointment of more czars than in Russia, the Soviet Union or anywhere else in the world ever in history. Furthermore in yet another violation of the Constitution that he has trashed totally the czars report only to Obama. They may not be compelled even to appear before Congress, our elected, once representatives. (cont.)

The Past Is Prologue But - 2
In other words Obama is ruining the U.S. and us in anarchy, chaos and as a third world, despotic, evil dictator. He is destroying systematically the U.S. that he hates. Come on he ran as a racist, black supremacist on “hope for change” in the U.S. he hates because he hates himself due to his “exotic background.” Those are the words he used on p. 120 in an attempt to explain away his entire life up to time of publication of the Audacity of Hope. That title was taken from a “G-D America” Wright rant in the church that honors W.E.B. DuBois and Louis Farrakhan, who dubbed Obama the Messiah. Then Obama had the audacity to tell us when throwing Wright under the bus that he never heard any such thing while sitting in the church apparently deaf, blind and dumb, part of that time with Michelle and their precious, little girls.
If you have not read Obama’s bio books and the Obama/Biden Priority Plan at whitehouse.org you need to apologize again for your ignorance going to stupidity. You owe another apology since I know none of you can name and defend one thing, just one thing Obama has done good for the U.S. or us, you too, before, on or since 1/20/09.
While you are reading if you do please click on my name and read a more complete analysis of Obama, why we must get him out of the office to which he is a pretender and how we might be best able to do it.
Just for grins or something, like maybe revulsion, vomiting or nightmares, I suggest you Google Madeline Albright and look at “Image results for madeline albright” – the centerfold-type pic – most appropriate for Playboy or Penthouse - the Geriatric Set Editions or Weightlifters Monthly. After all she did brag she could leg press her own weight with those tree trunk, thunder thighs and NFL inside lineman calves of hers.
