Venezuelan authorities have detained a suspect in the shooting deaths of two National Guard soldiers.

Venezuelan prosecutors say 20-year-old Johan Manuel Mora Rodriguez was detained at a National Guard checkpoint near where the killings occurred in western Tachira state.

Tuesday's statement from prosecutors says that two guns were seized, and that the man is to appear in court soon for a preliminary hearing.

Venezuelan authorities say the National Guard soldiers were shot multiple times on Monday at a roadside checkpoint near the border with Colombia.

Prosecutors said they believe the troops were attacked by four men on two motorcycles. The motive remains unclear.
